Fences

Marc Karzen /// Partition: Linear Resolve /// dev-mode

In this series by Marc Karzen, we embark on an exploration of metaphysical constructs that delineate our collective existence. Fences, partitions, diving lines — tangible and metaphorical, stand as sentinels between realms, carving the ephemeral contours of societal boundaries. Against the backdrop of resolute urban architecture, these images weave a narrative of separation and convergence, a surreal choreography of form and function.

Karzen’s partitions transcend their mundane functionality, becoming symbolic thresholds between the known and the unknown. Chain-link becomes a delicate lattice, a delicate veil that separates yet invites contemplation. Barriers, adorned with primary colors, metamorphose into portals, challenging the observer to peer beyond the superficial and engage in a dialogue with the liminal spaces that exist between constraint and liberation.

“Trying to fall asleep, forever, while organizing things in places and timing — whether it was before the test in school or photo shoot the next day, putting things in the right place in order is something I do. With a camera, I can organize spaces, improv, and also organize things in advance — try to bring things in their right place, to tell the story.”

These photographs are not mere captures of physical structures but rather gates into the abstract realms of human interaction and societal dynamics. Lines of demarcation become lines of intersection, where the urban tapestry converges with the vibrant spectrum of the human spirit. The viewer is compelled to question the nature of borders—both visible and concealed—inviting a contemplation on the fragility of the divisions that shape our collective journey.
