Marc Karzen, the author of the photos of this story, is a photographer of the latest generation, born in Paris in the hospital of the Americans, on January 8, 1957, he is only 22 years old. It is difficult for a boy of this age to enter the field of fashion photographers who are already known at an international level, but by scrolling through his brief curriculum, one notices a determination that partly explains the timidly achieved success.
He was born in France, we said, but little but little Marc grew up in Louisville, Kentucky (USA), until, at the age of 12 and later enrolled in courses at Santa Monica College in Los Angeles, immediately giving an artistic culture to his school education. He later decides to perfect himself at the Art Center but after a short time he gives up to completely decide on photography.
His training as a photographer is all done in the field. Marc is too eager to immediately put his intuitions into practice to carry out an internship with some more or less established photographer, "Being an assistant is like going to school, you have to do what you are told to do and the path to individuality becomes too long. I prefer to get my own experience by searching and experimenting on my own.”
Back in Paris, where he prefers to live, he is helped by photographer friend Dana Ross, who helps directs him in the trades and meeting other artists, painters, illustrators — whose activity is to guide the very young photographer in forming his own education vision and the exhibitions that enrich the cultural life of the French capital are also fundamental for his professional growth. Not at home, Marc claims to be a frequent visitor to the Center Beaubourg.
From the lively images, from the strong colors spread over large surfaces distributed with rigorous graphic balance, broken at times by the point of attention given by a face, a body, an unexpected object, one actually notices a cultural background where modern painting and cinematography converge, the latter betrayed by a cut and a movement that animates Karzen's photos of an unusual dynamic. They are faces, architecture, urban landscapes, dominated by bright, sometimes violent light, which is almost always that of the sun: "I work mainly outdoors, in natural light or even with flash. “I love the strong shadows, the high contrasts between the colors. I adore pure, saturated colours, and if the daylight is not enough I add that of lightning, because in this way the colors can sing.”

Marc Karzen, l’autore della foto di questa servizio, é un fotozione: nato a Parigi, nell’ospedale degli americani, 1’8 gennaio del ’57, ha solo 22 anni. E’ difficile che un ragazzo di questa eta entri nel campo dei fotografi do moda conosciuti già a livello internationale, ma scorrendo il suo pur breva curriculum si nota una determinazione che spiega in parte il successo pavidamente ottenuto.
Nasce in Francia, abbiamo detto, ma il piccolo ma il piccolo Marc cresce a Louisville, nel Kentucky (USA), fini a quando, a 12 anni, si iscrive ai corsi del Santa Monica College di Los Angeles, dando subito l’impronta di una cultura artistica alla sua formazione scolastica. Decide in seguito di perfezionarsi presso l’Art Center ma dopo breve tempo rinuncia per deciicarsi completamente alla fotografia.
La Sua formazione come fotografo é tutta fatta sul campo; Marc é troppo impaziente di porre subito in pratica le sue intuizioni per effettuare un tirocinio di praticantato presso qualche fotografo più o meno affermato: “Essere assistente ´come andare alla scuola, bisogna fare quello che ti vien detto di fare e il cammino per la realizzazione individuale diviene troppo lungo. Preferisco farmi la mia esperienza cercando e sperimentando da solo.
Tonato a Parigi, dove preferisce vivere, vivere, viene aiutato da amici fotografo, travesti Dana Ross, che lo indirizza nel mestiere e gli fa conoscere artisti, pittori, illustratori, la cui attività é di guida al giovanissimo fotografo nella formazione di una propria educazione visiva, fondamentali per la sua crescita professionale anche le mostre che arricchiscono la vita cultuale della capitale francese, non a case Marc dichiara di essere un assiduo frequentatore del Centre Beaubourg.
Dalle immagini vive, dai forti colori stesi su ampie superfici distribuite con rigoroso equilibrio grafico, spezzato a tratti dal punto d’attenzione dato da un viso, da un corpo, da un oggetto imprevisto, si nota in effetti una background culturale dove pittura moderna e cinematografia confluiscono, quest’ultima tradita un taglio e da un movimento che anima le foto di Karzen di un insolito dinamico. Sonovisi, architecture, paesaggi urbani, dominati da luca brillante, a volte violenta, che é quasi sempre quella del sole: “Lavoro soprattutto in esterni, in luce naturale o anche col flash : amo le ombre forti, i contrasti elevati fra i colori. adoro i color puri, saturi, e se la luce del giorno non basta ci aggiungo quella del lampo, perché in questo modo i colori posano cantare”
